chlorine dangerous for your jewelry

Chlorine is Dangerous for Your Jewelry

By | Blog | No Comments

Pool and Hot Tub alert! Chlorine is bad for your gold and silver jewelry!

Chlorine and chlorine-like-chemicals such as bromine attack the alloys used in karat gold, leaving the metal brittle and thus susceptible to breaking in areas that have been stressed, such as the bend in a prong or stretched segment of a shank.

Chlorine has an oxidizing effect on silver causing it to turn black.

So remove your jewelry and put it in a safe place to prevent these problems.

Then have a great pool party!

We are the recipient of the 2007 president’s award for volunteer service.

Presidents award for volunteer service 2007

Letter from the whitehouse

We received this because of the efforts that we put forth to help our son, Dino, who was serving in Iraq, in the Marines Weapons Co 3/24. One day he called us at the store and told his mother, Valerie, that they needed fire retardant underwear, so we started raising money for that. He then told us that they needed raincoats and we got those and then he told us that they needed spot lights for their humvees and we sent those to his unit.

We did this with the help of Debbie Fisher whose son, Travis, was in Iraq with our son, Dino.
And, of course, with all of the people who donated money to help us with this.

“Below is an excerpt from an email that I went to another father detailing what we had done”

My son Dino is a Marine and he just returned from his 7 months in Iraq and he came home in one piece. Due to the fact that he was hunting for ied’s and he was in the lead humvee and two of his guys were badly burned over 70 % of their bodies-he asked me to send him some Nomex underwear so I and a friend started e-mailing friends and family and raised about $17,000 and sent about 200 pairs of flame retardant underwear-we actually found a new type that was softer and supposed to be better than Nomex. Then he asked for 32 raincoats which we sent-we were able to find dark green finally. Then he asked for spot lights that they could put on heir humvees so they could see better at night and we sent a lot of those-I don’t remember how many plus extra bulbs. I feel very good knowing that we might have made someone feel more secure.

We did not solicit this recognition. Another father of one of the Marines that served with our son heard the story and asked if it would be ok if he submitted our story for the award and we said yes.award

EGL International Diamond Grading Reports

By | Blog | No Comments

A lot of news lately about lawsuits and potential lawsuits involving jewelers who sell diamonds that have EGL international diamond grading reports.

A customer looked at a diamond in our store recently and then proceeded to tell us that she could get a similar diamond somewhere else in Springfield, MO of a certain color and clarity but at a lower price than our diamond.  The price did no make sense to us, so we asked her to find out who graded the diamond and to let us know.  She then came in later and told us that it had an EGL diamond grading report.  Valerie then told the customer to google EGL grading reports for herself.  The EGL is not the same as the GIA.  The GIA created the system that is used today and Valerie has been a graduate gemologist for over 30 years.

Established in 1931, the GIA is the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones, and pearls. A public benefit, nonprofit institute, the GIA is the leading source of knowledge, standards, and education in gems and jewelry.

Martin Rapaport, as of Oct 1, 2014, decided to no longer use any grading reports from any of the European Gemological Laboratories “EGL”   RapNet is the largest online diamond trading network that allows diamond trade professionals to buy and sell diamonds online.

The EGL International is not the only company that grades with very lax standards.

We at Manoli’s Jewelers prefer to use GIA and AGS diamond grading reports in our store.  If you have any questions about this diamond grading issue contact us at 417-882-0394.

Manoli is a Master Goldsmith

A glimpse of Manoli, who is a master goldsmith, working on a customer’s ring at his jewelry bench at Manoli’s Jewelers in Springfield MO.

Manoli started making jewelry by hand in Rhodes Greece and then moved to Melbourne Australia where he made bangle bracelets for several years.

He worked briefly in New York, but left the jewelry world for the life of a professional wrestler, Mike Pappas, until he quit wrestling and went back to the jewelry business in Kansas City, MO in 1978.

He then moved to Springfield, MO in 1978/1979 where he and his wife bought a jewelry business that did the jewelry repairs and work for lots of jewelry stores.  They did work for about 50 jewelry stores at their peak.

In 1985, Manoli and his wife, Valerie, bought an existing jewelry store from one of their customers and that is now 30 years ago.  Hard to believe that 30 years have gone by.

Manoli has a great deal of jewelry repair experience.  Which is very important.  Sometimes people ask how much do we charge to do a repair, but it is also just as important to ask, how much experience does the jeweler have who is doing the work.

Gemologist Station

This is the gemologist station at Manoli’s Jewelers in Springfield MO.

Valerie is a graduate gemologist with 30 years of experience.

She received her training via the GIA, Gemological Institute of America, and received her graduate gemologist diploma in 1985.

Getting a GG or graduate gemologist diploma at that time required extensive studies in diamonds, diamond grading, colored stones and in gem identification.

She does appraisals for insurance purposes……..but more importantly, she checks and grades the diamonds that we sell.

We usually sell our loose diamonds with a certificate from the GIA or the AGS, but even with a certificate, we the store, are accountable for what the diamond grade is called.  A certificate does not release the store from responsible diamond grading.
